Afterschool Explorations in Science (AXIS) Project

Profile of Science Coach Position

The science coaches for the Afterschool Explorations in Science (AXIS) Project provide hands-on training and technical assistance to afterschool program staff in carrying out developed project science activities for youth in grades 5-8. Coaches will spend an average of 2-4 hours per week in each program. Coaches will not lead the science activities, but will assist and support program staff.

Coaches will be trained at INCRE and will begin their work with programs in September 2005. Coaches will work with programs Monday-Thursday and meet at INCRE every Friday afternoon for debriefing, follow-up training and coordination with the development team and fellow coaches.

Coaches can be nominated by afterschool programs, but will be hired and paid by INCRE.

Coaches should have the following profile:

Experience in teaching science at elementary and/or middle school level

Bachelor’s degree in science education or related discipline

Teacher certification

Demonstrated ability and experience in providing professional development for teachers and/or afterschool program staff

Demonstrated ability and experience to work as part of team in education settings

Bilingual in Spanish

Coaches will work on a part-time basis after school and will be paid on an hourly basis at a competitive rate. This is a part-time contractual position without benefits. Local travel costs will be reimbursed. Coaches may work with one or more afterschool programs, depending on their availability.
